Completion of Lab 4

Here is a picture of the map I had to label manually using Adobe. The object of the assignment was to try and get the labels on are map to match the labels on the original map. Labeling is more of an art form in cartography. The type of font, size, color, and the spacing of the letters all come into account in typography.

Here are the results for Exercise 3. The map is a representation of a Mollweide Graticule Projection. This is one of the more well known projections used to represent the Earth.

Here is the results for my second project for Geography 310. It is a combination of different types of circles which have been used to represent the Earth. There is the perfect circle, Ellipsoid, geoid, and a natural surface.

However, maps have more uses than just as a road atlas, and the process of making them has evolved over the centuries. Politicians use maps to locate the highest concentration of Democrats age 18-29. Meteorologists use maps to forecast the weather to regions. The list is endless on the uses of maps and grows every year. Below is a list of sites about cartography and geography.

The Geography Department at GMU: This site shows the different faculty members that work in the geography department as well as show off research projects being done in geography. The site also has information on careers in Geography as well as a link to the geoclub. http://geog.gmu.edu/

Geography 310 Blog: This site offers links to the rest of the students enrolled in GEOG 310. The site will also be collectively updated with useful hints and tricks in cartography as well as links to other geographic sites. http://geog310.blogspot.com/

ESRI: This site is a shop where you can buy the latest in GIS software. Numerous companies and organizations use ESRI's software to construct maps. http://www.esri.com/

The National Geospatial-Intelligenence Agency: This government agency collects geospatial information and puts them in a database for both Intelligence agencies such as the FBI and the CIA, and the military. They collect all forms of geospatial data, satellite imagery imagery intelligence, and geospatial information. The United States Geological Survey: This site has over 300,000 books and maps on file. You can buy many products at their online store including maps. You can view satellite imagery of your home or view other maps interactively online. http://www.usgs.gov/
